National Weather Service

ThursdayMarch22

Expect quiet conditions with slightly milder temperatures Thursday and Friday. The high pressure that has brought clear skies and moderate weather will move to the north as a low front penetrates the area.  The next weather system is then expected to produce precipitation later Friday night into Saturday. Confidence is increasing on a swath of significant wet snow (possibly 6″ or more) with this system, which is currently favored to occur in a fairly narrow corridor from near Sterling, IL to Rensselaer, IN. There are a few important items of note. The first is that there will likely be a sharp cutoff either side of the heaviest snow swath where snow accumulations drop off quickly. The second is that the heaviest snow swath could shift south or north from the current forecast. With the lingering uncertainty of exactly where the heaviest snow swath sets up, which will dictate where most significant winter impacts occur, please stay tuned for the latest forecast updates.

If you have plans to travel in the affected region on Friday night or Saturday morning, please check road conditions beforehand. The area you are originating could very likely have no or little snow, but the narrow band could have as much as 6″ of accumulation. Again this band can move north or south. So stay tune. We will have updates on the show from SIP 2 in Highland this afternoon.
